Low cost car hire Tenerife Airport

There are two airport options on the Spanish island of Tenerife.  One is located to the north of the island, the other to the south.  The northern airport is called Los Rodeos and the southern Reina Sofia.  The most commonly used airport from a tourist point of view is the southern airport, Reina Sofia which handles the majority of the island’s international traffic.  The northern airport is the destination for domestic flights coming in and going out to mainland Spain.

Reina Sofia is just over half an hours drive in your low cost hire car from the island’s capital, Santa Cruz.  The more recently constructed of the two airports and dating back to only the early 1970’s Reina Sofia has a good range of facilities including cash machines, foreign exchange and a good selection of shops and eateries.  Low cost car hire is readily available in the airport and boasts a reasonable selection of players.  That said, as with any facility that can be organised before you land, your low cost car hire is best sorted out online before you travel in order to secure the best possible deal.

The largest of all of the Canary Islands, Tenerife attracts a huge number of tourists each year, thanks to its pretty much year round good weather, its 400 year history and of course its beaches.  Once you’ve picked up your low cost hire car, you can choose to head off and visit the island’s capital, Santa Cruz in the north east or Puerto de la Cruz in the west.  Or, if you’re into architecture, then you’re likely to be drawn by the likes of La Laguna.

Santa Cruz, which is only a 30 minute or so drive from Tenerife Airport, is a bustling cosmopolitan port city with its vast array of night life, restaurants and bars.  Although not recognized as a major tourist city, it’s the perfect place to head if you’ve had enough of the beach and want a bit of people watching.   In fact, only a few minutes drive in your low cost hire car from Santa Cruz, in San Andres, you’ll find amongst the best fish restaurants on the island.

If it’s peace and tranquility you’re after, then head for one of Tenerife’s main tourist attractions, the Mount Teide National Park.  The park is home to Mount Teide which is the highest point in the whole of Spain, towering above the island at 12,000 feet and being part of the dormant volcano which was responsible for the abundance of black sand on the beaches around Tenerife.
