Only a couple of miles away is the village of Roquetas de Mar, that is a prosperous village with big shopping surfaces, and with all the services of a big town, soon it will have a theater, and the Roquetas de Mar bull ring and an aquarium (one of the biggest, and most modern in Spain ).

Roquetas de Mar is an ancient city, once populated by fishermen and salt miners. It was founded by the Phoenicians and during the Roman domination was known as Turania which currently is called Torrequebrada de los Bajos. Numerous archeological remains have been located in this area. The Roman town was moved to its current location after a flood destroyed the old site. Salt mining began during the Muslim era. The acquisition of salt as well as fishing constituted the city's economic base until recently. Irrigation and greenhouses converted the surrounding fields into magnificent, fertile gardens. In the second half of this century, tourism was introduced to this beautiful zone and visitors now come to the area year-round.

Roquetas de Mar is located on the ample plain at the foot of Gádor Sierra and is today a tourist hot spot of great importance. 40 minutes from Almeria airport, a very popular resort set against a beautiful mountain backdrop with a fine, uncrowded, sandy beach stretching for many miles. Although modern, it still preserves its calssic Spanish charm and authentic atmosphere. With many excellent restaurants serving mouthwatering Spanish specialities, as well as lively bars, shops and a bustling fishing harbour, Roquetas has something for everyone.
