Low Cost Car Hire Barajas Airport

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

If you’re heading to Barajas Airport, it’s likely you’re planning to take in the cultural, tourist, gastronomic or shopping opportunities in this rich and varied area of Spain.  If this is the case, you’d be well advised to organise your low cost car hire so your car will be ready for you when you arrive.  Barajas is the name of the district falling under the control of the city of Madrid.  Administratively, the district is split into Alameda de Osuna, Historic Barajas, Rudder and Corralejo.

If you’re planning to really get out and about and enjoy the richness of this area, you’d do well to have your own hire car.  Amongst the sites to see are the Royal Palace, which is the biggest royal palace in Western Europe and arguably Madrid’s most beautiful building.   Other buildings worth a visit are the Cathedral, which again is a big, signature element of Madrid’s culture and Templo de Debod which is a C2nd Egyptian Temple, set right in the middle of Madrid.  There’s an abundance of squares and streets which you simply shouldn’t miss, for example, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor Plaza de Oriente, Plaza de Cibeles and Plaza de la Villa, to name but a few.

Some of the most popular reasons to visit this corner of Spain are of course the famous flamenco; the football team, Real Madrid; the astonishing array of tapas on offer and Madrid’s weekly flea market, The Rastro.  For a more cultural option, there’s an abundance of Museums including The Prado, The Reina Sofia (which boasts Picasso’s ‘Woman in Blue’) and The Thyssen-Bornemisza which plays host to arguably the world’s best private art collection.

Madrid-Barajas international Airport is Madrid’s main airport.  A bustling airport, which is reputed to be the worlds 11th busiest, it is a short drive from the main centre and boasts a great selection of shops and restaurants.  The name of the airport comes from the neighbouring district of Barajas and it is one of the main transport links between Europe and Latin America.  Initially constructed in 1927, the airport has developed from a relatively small affair to welcoming tens of thousands of passengers per year.  The airport has four terminals which service flights from a host of carriers as well as enjoying representation from all major low cost car hire companies in terminals 1 and 4.  The low cost car hire desks are to be found in Terminal 1 in front of baggage reclaim hall 1 and on the first floor of Terminal 4.

Ryanair has just announced that it is cancelling its service of three flights a day between Madrid and Valencia Airport from April of this year.

The reason is thought to be the new AVE high speed rail link which offers a very competitive service and allows passengers to travel between the two cities in 90 minutes. The low-cost airline may now increase the frequency of other connections or open other routes elsewhere.

On Tuesday the Spanish airline Iberia also announced that its passenger numbers have fallen because to the new AVE link and it would be ending its daily connections between Valencia and Madrid. Air Nostrum will continue to operate the route.

The virtual flight attendants are easily identified as they are almost 2 ½ metres high and green in colour. They feature a touch screen computer for passengers to make online enquiries or they can speak to an agent live via videoconference.

The sort of information they contain is flight boarding information, details of cafeterias and shops at the airport as well as tourist information services.
