Low Cost Car Hire Canary Islands

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Situated off the North West coast of Africa, the Canary Islands are a Spanish autonomous community and include, amongst others, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.  Extremely popular with tourists due in large part to the year round ambient temperatures and stunning beaches, there is an abundance of low cost car hire choice throughout the Canary Islands Airports.

The three most popular of the Canary Islands are Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote which attract a reputed 12 million tourists every year.  Tenerife is split into the north and south islands, both of which boast their own airport.  In fact, not surprisingly, thanks to their popularity, all of the major islands have their own airport, including the smaller islands of La Gomera and El Hierro.

Tenerife South Island Airport is the larger and more popular of the two islands airports, with a huge passenger throughput built up since its opening in the 1970’s.  With a good range of international flights, it’s no surprise that Tenerife South Airport offers a comprehensive range of car hire options.  That said, you’d be well advised to select and book your chosen low cost car hire online before you land to avoid any disappointment or unnecessary hassle.  Once you’ve picked up your low cost hire car, you’ll be perfectly placed to get to know the well and not so well known treasures of this popular island.

Gran Canaria Airport, which is often called Las Palmas airport is the 5th biggest in Spain and handles about 10 million passengers a year.  Located in the east of the island, it’s the ideal spot to pick up your low cost hire car and head off to explore the major sites on the island.  Well known for its Las Maspalomas sand dunes, you mustn’t miss the opportunity to take a camel ride during your visit, alternatively if you’re a water-front fan, then take your hire car down to Puerto de Mogan marina to do some people watching.  For families, there’s The Holiday World theme park and the Crocodile Park in Villa de Aguimes.  Gran Canaria really is a holiday destination with something to offer everyone.

Lanzarote, the third of the three most popular islands draws tourists from all over Europe to enjoy its beaches, bustling towns and sleepy villages.  Pick up your low cost hire car at Lanzarote Airport, which is located between Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife and take off to explore the popular haunts of Puerto Calero, which is only 10km away or Costa Teguise which is only 20 minutes away.  The choice is yours.

No matter which Canary Island Airport you choose your low cost car hire options are well catered for and easily arranged online before you travel.

Low Cost Car Hire El Hierro Airport

El Hierro, often called Isla del Meridiano (the Meridian Island) is the smallest, most south westerly of the Canary Islands with a population of just over 10,000. With a surface area of just over 250km2 El Hierro is the perfect destination to explore in a low cost hire car. Like the other Canary Islands, El Hierro is extremely mountainous and volcanic, making its landscape a veritable haven of variety. A popular tourist destination it boasts both a small airport and a ferry terminal.

The name Meridian Island originates from the fact that El Hierro is so remote. In fact it is reputed to have been thought to be the end of the world until Columbus sailing in 1492 proved the contrary. This reputation gave the island the title Meridian until 1884 when it was subsequently replaced by Greenwich Meridian.

Best known for its clear waters and year round sunshine, El Hierro attracts an abundance of divers from all over the world. With a rich and varied coastline, you’ll really want to get out and about on this island, making a hire car a must. For lovers of places quiet, silent, remote and extreme, El Hierro is a delight. Island life is slow-paced and simple and UNESCO has declared the island a biosphere reserve. The island has little traffic and in fact boasts only one traffic light, which was introduced through absolute necessity due to a one-lane tunnel which was built in 2005. So you’re unlikely to have much frustration driving your hire car around this island!

The capital of the island, Villa de Santa Maria de Valverde, more commonly known as Valverde is to be found on the north-east of the island, about 600 metres above sea level. A popular attraction with discerning tourists, but more significantly with island inhabitants, La Caleta, is situated on the east coast of El Hierro not far from El Hierro Airport. Formerly an important harbour for the island, the town now plays host to a few apartments, a couple of bars and a public swimming pool. For anyone seeking bathing opportunities, Pozo de las Calcosas, which is on the north coast boasts two natural stone swimming pools as well as an attractive range of stone built, thatched houses.

A small airport with minimal flight options, El Hierro Airport is only a couple of kilometres east of Valverde and has a café, shop and cash point. As you can imagine, low cost car hire options on El Hierro are limited, so it’s absolutely essential to make arrangements before you arrive to avoid disappointment.
