A route through the Costa del Sol by car

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

This road route in Malaga generally covers from the capital city of Malaga, all the way through Marbella to Estepona. It’s a route of sun and beaches where you’ll find some of the most touristic spots, villages and natural sites of the whole Mediterranean.

Route from Malaga

The itinerary proposed by the Ministry of Development begins in Malaga city and passes through the towns of Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Marbella, including Puerto Banus, until it reaches Estepona. To the north of marbella you’ll also find beautiful natural sites up towards the mountains, such as the Sierra de las Nieves (the Snowy Mountains) and Sierra Bermeja.

If you were to tour this route from Estepona, you could actually extend it passing Malaga city and reaching the town of Nerja, and, although this municipality belongs to the Axarquia route, it’s highly recommended to visit as it offers great beaches and hosts the famous Nerja caves.

The Costa del Sol’s tourist board describes and highlights the following characteristics of the area in a short, but very interesting, summary: “The coastal facade on the Costa del Sol, situated in the meridional fringe of southern Spain, has an extension of around 161 kilometres. Its beaches, benefitted by an exceptional Mediterranean climate with average temperatures in summer of around 25 degrees, provide a unique variety of settings, even small hidden bays in a purely natural environment. The hours of sun to enjoy on the beach in summer seem endless. With over three hundred days a year of clear blue skies, without a single cloud, a notable warm sea with an average temperature of eighteen degrees and, in August, can even surpass twenty-four degrees. The summer season can extend beyond the months of July, August and September. There are several and varied swimming areas, with a complete relation of services that have deserved the recognition of the European Union with the awarding of blue flags. The majority of the beaches have modern beach bars (or ‘chiringuitos’ as they are locally known) right on the sand to enjoy the autochthonous gastronomy, with a menu dominated by fresh fish at very reasonable prices”.
