Low cost car hire Valladolid Airport

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

Located in the municipality of Villanubla in north west Spain, Valladolid Airport is a recently built affair with good facilities.  A good 2 hour drive in your low cost hire car in a north westerly direction from Madrid, Valladolid Airport is only 10km from the city of Valladolid itself acts as the gateway to a veritable haven for art and culture lovers.  Best known for its Renaissance art and architecture, Valladolid, with its population of around 320,000 draws visitors from all over Europe seeking to explore its galleries, museums and architecture.

The cathedral in Valladolid is an incomplete, yet interesting 16th century work which features a museum and the famous Juan de Juni altar as well as two portraits by Velazquez.  Don Quixote’s house is another attraction in Valladolid.  A very simple, whitewashed building in a not so desirable spot it was reputedly his home for the latter part of his life.  Another personality featured in the architecture of the city is Christopher Columbus who arrived in Valladolid in the early 1500’s after a long and grueling journey, a somewhat poor man and ended his life here.

The museums in Valladolid include the Patio Herreriano which is a former monastery which is now used to exhibit a huge range of modern Spanish art by artists such as Miro and Tapies.  The museum of sculpture however is Valladolid’s finest treasure, itself a magnificent piece of architecture which plays host to some of the finest Renaissance sculptures in Spain.

When you’ve done your tour of the city, it’s time to get in your low cost hire car and explore slightly further afield.  Simancas is situated to the south west of the city and is home to the fairy-tale Simancas Castle which was built in 1521 as well as a host of Moorish architectural examples, making for an enjoyable day out.  Easily accessible in your low cost hire car, to the east, there’s Penafiel which again boasts a spectacular cliffside castle as well as a reputation for producing amongst the best food and wine in Spain.

Built in the year 2000, Valladolid Airport enjoys a good range of facilities including cash machines, foreign exchange, duty free shop, restaurant and café.  Welcoming flights from all over Europe, but particularly the Spanish airports and the UK, the airport handles around 350,000 passengers each year.  Although all of the major low cost car hire players are represented at Valladolid Airport, including Hertz, Avis, National, Europcar and Alamo, you’d be well advised to organise your low cost car hire in advance of your arrival.  That way you’re sure to get the vehicle you want as well as a good price.
