Car Hire Offers Vitoria

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Vitoria is in northern Spain and is less visited by British travelers than some of the Southern cities. It’s true the weather here is not as good as the South but with temperatures in the mid twenties during summer it is still a perfect place to consider visiting whilst you are in Spain. So if the sun doesn’t shine every day hiring a car and seeing some of the fabulous historic centers which make the Alava region so special could be a great option.

Vitoria is the capital of the Alava province and of the autonomous region of the Basque Country. In fact Vitoria has two names it is officially Vitoria-Gasteiz. The Name Nuevo Victoria was given to the city by King Sancho VI of Navarre, who found the modern city of Vitoria in 1181. Before this Vitoria as it stands today didn’t really exist, the closest inhabited area was the hamlet of Gasteiz which stood on the hill around which Vitoria grew. Vitoria was little more than a walled defensive outpost which belonged to the kingdom of Navarre.

Vitoria grew to the city we know today mainly because of its strategic place between the table lands of Castile and Northern Europe. The large number of passing travelers meant it became an important trade center. In the 13th century three markets a week took place and two very important annual fairs were held.

One of Vitoria’s most interesting historical elements was that the city held its own individual principals that became laws. All inhabitants of Vitoria were declared to be equal, there was no distinction between nobility and the general public.

Vitoria has a small airport but you will find it difficult to get cheap flights into the city. Most travelers fly to Bilbao airport. Bilbao is only 66 kilometers away from Vitoria and is a relatively easy drive on as all the roads in the city are very good. If you arrive at Bilbao airport I would definitely suggest hiring a car. This kind of service is a lot cheaper than in the UK. In fact you can often save money during your stay by hiring a car because you will avoid taxi costs and transport costs during your stay.

A short distance away is the town of Mendoza where you can see the medieval tower and the dungeons below. The medieval tower discovered in Doñana is now known to have been a dungeon used for prisoners and perhaps lovers in the Palace. The latter possibility has been strengthened with the discovery of two bodies. A legend says that courtesans kept their lovers there until they die.

If you have had enough of narrow cobbled winding streets and this city steeped in history an escape to Garaio will come as a welcome escape. Your hire car will be perfect for a day trip Garaio it is only 15 kilometers away, here you’ll find all of the activities which you can’t enjoy in the city. Cycling, mountain biking, hill walking, sailing, canoeing and others are all possible in the park. For any serious bird watchers out there make sure you visit the Mendixur Bird Observatory.

These outdoor parks have facilities for swimming, enjoying a drink in the sun, picnics and plenty of space to enjoy the beautiful countryside in this area of Spain.

Ensure you pre book your hire car as far in advance as you can before your trip. Remember to take into account the luggage you will be taking with you when you book the car. If you’re taking sports equipment make sure it will fit in the car you order. A smaller car will undoubtedly be cheaper if you are not planning to use you car very much this will be best; but there’s nothing quite like travelling around Spain in the luxury of a convertible hire car.

Santander is the modern and cosmopolitan capital of the Cantabria region. The city is located on a beautiful piece of the northern Spanish coastline, eleven beautiful sandy coves and sweeping beaches are found within this urban setting. Santander combines nature, the mountains and the sea to perfection all wrapped around the setting of this busy northern Spanish city. The bays and beaches are considered some of the most stunning in the world; Santander offers all you would expect from a Spanish beach holiday whilst having the convenience of this provincial capital city extremely close. A stay here will offer something for everyone to enjoy.

Santander Airport is located five kilometers outside of the city centre. Internal flights are organised by Iberia who fly between Madrid and Barcelona. The biggest operator from the UK is Ryan Air. They have daily flights to Santander and if booked in advance are usually reasonably priced. Look out for their tax free weekend sales when prices are drastically cheaper than usual.

Alternatively it is possible to cross from the UK by ferry. Brittany Ferries sail twice weekly from Portsmouth and crossings take a leisurely 24 hours. This is a relaxed way of getting to Spain and if you are planning on taking your own car to explore the area it can work out alot cheaper.

For the perfect combination of sea and mountain located on either side of a stunning city visit Santander. Santander’s location between Asturias and the Basque Country where you will find Bilbao and the Guggenheim museum and overlooking the Cantabrian Sea is simply perfect. Under Roman rule it was a very important port known as Portus Victoriae Luliobrigensium, but the current name is from a third century martyr called Saint Emeterio. In the Late nineteenth Century Santander became known as an exclusive very fashionable coastal resort. It became popular with Spain’s elite class and many of the buildings still exist from this highlight in history. Today it welcomes everyone! Its wonderful beach together with the promenade and the Magdalena Peninsula are some of the main attractions for tourists.

This area of Spain, and in particular the local Basque Country are worth visiting and exploring whilst you are here; the best way to see as much or as little as you want at a pace you can set is to hire a car. Car hire in Spain is very affordable, the prices range dramatically but are usually a lot cheaper than car hire in the UK. It sometimes works out cheaper to hire a car as you do not have the cost of hiring taxis.

Consider taking a drive along the old pilgrim route of Santiago de Compostela, and end up in Bilbao for a trip to the world famous Guggenheim museum. Bilbao can be reached in just one hour by taking the beautiful coastal road the E-70 you will be treated to some of the most stunning coastline Spain has to offer. Follow this twisting road all the way to Bilbao where you can experience everything The Guggenheim Gallery has to offer. The building is a work of art on its own merits. Often as much time is spent exploring the undulating titanium curves of the building as the works of art housed within it. Frank Gehry’s out standing creation should be top of you list of visits in Bilbao. An entire day can easily be spent exploring the galleries and enjoying a leisurely snack by the river. For anyone who visited the Tate modern in the early days you will recognize Louise Bourgeois’ giant spider which now towers above visitors at the Guggenheim entrance.

The building, sited as it is in a port town, is intended to resemble a ship. Its brilliantly reflective panels resemble fish scales, echoing the other organic (and, in particular, fish-like) forms that recur commonly in Gehry’s designs, as well as the river Nervión upon which the museum sits.
Also in typical Gehry fashion, the building is uniquely a product of the period’s technology. Computer aided design and visualizations were used heavily in the structure’s design. Computer simulations of the building’s structure made it feasible to build shapes that architects of earlier eras would have found nearly impossible to construct.

Vitoria-Gasteiz is roughly twice as far and inland from Bilbao; but could be reached in your hire car in just two hours. Perhaps a little too far for a day trip if you have time to explore you could make this a stop over visit or even end your holiday here. You can hire a car from one location and drop it off at another. This means you could easily fly home from an entirely different airport.

Car Hire Offers Bilbao

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Bilbao is situated in Spain’s Basque country in the region of Biscay. This city sometimes goes relatively unnoticed by tourists but is in fact Spain’s sixth largest city and largest of all ports. Bilbao is home to the incredible Guggenheim museum. It opened in 1997 and since then Bilbao has risen through the ranks of cultural art destination, before the Guggenheim being built in Bilbao was a heavily industrialized city and had little appeal for tourists. Today the Guggenheim often steals the limelight from the rest of the city. There’s so much more to Bilbao today than meets the eye.

In this part of Spain a hire car is definitely needed, by having a car you can fully take in the wonderful city and go out a little further and experience the beautiful countryside. A hire car from Bilbao airport can let you explore the region at your own speed in your own time. Local towns such as Pamplona and Vitoria are easily reached and definitely worth taking time to visit. Vitoria is only 66 kilometers away and very easy to get to via the new roads.

The Guggenheim building is a work of art on its own merits. Often visitors spend just as much time studying and taking in the outside of the building as they do actually inside of it. Frank Gehry’s magnificent creation should be top of you list of visits in Bilbao. An whole day can easily be spent exploring the galleries and enjoying a leisurely lunch by the river. For anyone who visited the Tate modern in the early days you will recognize Louise Bourgeois’ giant spider which now towers above visitors to the Guggenheim entrance.

If you love visiting European cities, don’t worry, Bilbao has so much more to offer. The Guggenheim is with out doubt one of Bilbao’s most awesome pieces of architecture. Before it was built Bilbao was struggling, in the 1980s the large scale industrial trade which the city once thrived on was dwindling; the docks and steel works and ugly ship yards were left to decay.

Luckily city planners and leading architects took this opportunity to re design Bilbao and give it a whole new image. Today a state of the art metro system connects the classical and industrial past to all of the areas of modern building, the economic re-birth also improved the existing airport, making it bigger. It is now located just eight kilometers north of the city, now one of the biggest in the region makes it perfect to hire a car from.

The flight to Bilbao from London is 2 hours, once you arrive you will be able to collect your pre-booked hire car at the airport. All car hire offices are located in the same area making it easy to find the correct one.

If you have time during your stay in Bilbao there are 2 local towns which are well worth visiting: Pamplona and Vitoria.

Pamplona has a wonderful historical center involved in some of Spain’s most interesting folklore, surrounding Pamplona are the stunning Navarra mountain and the vineyards which produce the local wine.

One of the most famous festivals in all of Spain, the San Fermines and encierro or Running of the Bulls is a serious spectacle to behold. Ernest Hemmingway was a lifelong fan of bull fighting and popularized the event in ‘The Sun Also Rises’, he returned as often as he could to Pamplona to witness the craziness of the running of the bulls. This event really isn’t for anyone faint of heart! 13 people have been killed during the run since 1924 when records began some people consider it to be inhumane today. The tradition dates back to 1591 and involves the bulls running through the streets from holding pens to an arena where they are killed. In between the young men of the town jump into the streets and run with the bulls dodging horn and hoof to show off their bravado.

Vitoria is the capital of the Alava province and of the autonomous region of the Basque Country. Most visitors to Vitoria arrive at Bilbao airport if you wanted to hire a car from Bilbao and end your trip in Vitoria this would be possible. In fact Vitoria has two names it is officially Vitoria-Gasteiz. The Name Nuevo Victoria was given to the city by King Sancho VI of Navarre, who founded the modern city of Vitoria in 1181. Before this Vitoria as it stands today didn’t really exist, the closest inhabited area was the hamlet of Gasteiz which stood on the hill around which Vitoria grew. One of Vitoria’s most interesting historical elements was that the city held its own individual principals that became laws. All inhabitants of Vitoria were declared equal; there was no difference considered between nobility and the general public.
