Sixt, one of Europe’s first car rental companies, is looking forward to its 100th birthday in 2012 with excitement. For decades, Sixt vehicles have been part of the “Mille Miglia”. Now the company is thrilled to again be one of the main sponsors and the exclusive car hire partner of the most prestigious classic car rally in the world – for all “Mille Miglia” drivers as well as for the “Mille Miglia” community.
From 11 to 15 May 2011, Sixt will play its part in the rally along the 1,600 kilometre stretch from Brescia – Rome – Brescia, offering all participants an exclusive transfer service: A modern fleet of Sixt cars will accompany participants, co-drivers, escort vehicles and the press. Some vehicles from the Sixt classic car fleet will also be at the starting line. Erich and Alexander Sixt will be behind the wheel of two Mercedes Benz Gullwings from 1955, Regine Sixt will drive a BMW 328 from 1937 and Konstantin Sixt will steer a Porsche Speedster from the year 1955.
In cooperation with BMW, Sixt will give away a MINI. BMW will donate a MINI Cooper Clubman Hampton under the motto “a MINI for the Minis”. The entire proceeds from the raffle draw will go to help the Regina Sixt’s Children’s Aid Foundation “Drying Little Tears”, supporting the construction of a children’s home in a poor area of Sicily.
Regine Sixt: “The legendary 1,000-mile rally has become a fixed part of our summer programme. I am proud to see the Sixt logo along the entire length of the most famous classic car rally. Experiencing how ‘tradition meets passion’ fills me with joy. It is a big challenge to deliver on the trust that the ‘Mille Miglia’ shows to Sixt.”
I watched the Airbus collision on the news last month. I can’t stand to see the big guys pushing the little guys around, what gives the Airbus A380 the right to park on top of another aeroplane? Yes you may be the largest aeroplane in the world but that doesn’t mean you don’t show some respect for the little guys.
Just in case you missed it the A380 managed to shunt a CRJ-700 whilst taxiing at JFK International Airport in early April.
If you feel as passionately as I do about this , please join my campaign to retro-fit all Airbus A380’s with parking sensors and also to recommend that all pilots have completed an advanced driving courses available in the U.K, which includes modules on reverse and parallel parking.
On another note I hope the pilot elected for a Collision Damage Waiver to reduce his excess

Are you a member of the RAC of the AA? No me neither, not because I don’t like to feel safe whilst travelling or because I think it is expensive. It’s just that like so many things, it’s a case of watching my pennies during a recession. However, as an iPhone enthusiast I may have now found the answer….RTR UK!
Having previously developed a ‘pay as you go’ accident and breakdown cover service, RTR UK now has an iPhone App available to its registered users. The Road to Recovery (RTR) iPhone App allows its users to access breakdown assistance at the touch of a screen.
The App uses the GPS of the your phone to locate your position and then puts you through to RTR’s call centre, which despatch a local recovery company out to your location.
The RTR scheme, which is free to join, aims to ensure the cost of recovery is 50-60% cheaper than contacting a local recovery operator direct. They are able to do this, because all RTR providers sign up to a fair pricing commitment.
The RTR scheme works by providing a central link between recovery operators, who benefit from higher volumes of business, and motorists like me, who are spared the cost of a service they may never use but still get the reassurance that it is there should they need it.
Currently the App is available for the iPhone and is already downloaded on mine! It is also in the process of being developed for Android phones, so watch this space!
