The Department of Beaches of Fuengirola Town Hall has announced that the beaches of Fuengirola obtained the highest health status of bathing waters by the Spanish Ministry of Health.
This rating refers to the bathing water of the seven beaches in the municipality which are rated as “excellent” based on surveys conducted since 2008 until today.
This popular destination on the Costa del Sol, Malaga, makes a continuous effort to ensure that the beaches have the highest quality, services, security, accessibility, etc.
Fuengirola beaches have all the services: toilets, showers, sunbeds, water sports areas, playgrounds, sports facilities, etc. There is also available free fitness equipment along the sea promenade and the river promenade; and there are reserved parking spaces along the promenade for the disabled and furthermore the first beach completely adapted for the disabled in Andalusia, dating from 2000.
Other factors adding to the excellence of Fuengirola´s coast are the collection of garbage on the beaches, fortnightly analytics to check the good water status, maintenance of beaches during the 12 months of the year and special services in the summer such as lifeguards.

If you are visiting Fuengirola or you live here, you won´t fail to be impressed with some of the new restaurants, tapas bars and pubs opening up near the town centre, and The Sushi Bar is one of the best.
Situated on the Avenida Jacinto Benavente, between the bus station and the beach, next to Mister Noodles, another good restaurant, The Sushi Bar serves a vast range of great sushi options, and also offer a superb home delivery service, which is ideal for eating in during the hot, summer evenings.
We have eaten twice in the bar, which is decorated in soothing whites, purples and mauves, giving a cool, clean appearance. The staff are friendly, and always offer to help if you are confused by the vast sushi choice on the menu. For sushi virgins, you can mix and match different dishes from the menu or ask for suggestions. The sushi comes with ginger, wasabi paste and soy sauce, which enhances the flavour of this traditional Japanese dish. The food is hand made, and the Sushi Bar also offers takeaway sushi boxes, along with salads and cold drinks.
Last time we ate at The Sushi Bar, we tried the Miso Soup, followed by The Menu Love, which comprised of Nigri Salmon, Nigri Tuna, Lubina, and Makri Avocado and Cucumber, which was absolutely delicious. If you are slightly squeamish about eating raw fish, plump for the vegetarian options, including avocado and cheese, egg and the vegetable California.
We ordered a menu trio to be delivered to our apartment last Saturday for lunch, between four of us. The cost was €49.90, which worked out at just €12.50 per head, and the selection of sushi was incredible. Including Nigri salmon, tuna and lubina, and Makri crab, avocado, cheese and salmon, everyone thought it was absolutely delicious, and well worth the money. We also ordered seaweed salad, which accompanied the sushi beautifully.
If you want something different, try the eggplant salad, the tuna tartar or the cooked soya beans with salt. Smaller menus are available, or you can choose from individual offerings. The largest menu is the Menu Friends, which would be enough for up to 10 diners, and costs €89.40.
Sushi is an acquired taste, and most people either love it or hate it. If you have never tried sushi, you can order just a few taster pieces, and the beauty of the Sushi Bar menu is its flexibility. Personally, I love the salmon sushi, but you are even well catered for if you have a sweet tooth. Desserts include lychee salad, fruit salad, Nutella Maki and Nutella and Banana Maki.
A small but adequate wine list accompanies the main menu, and you can even try some sake if you are brave enough, plus a range of beers and soft drinks.
Whether you love sushi, or you simply want to try it, The Sushi Bar is a friendly, stylish and comfortable place to come. Enjoy some of the finest Japanese cuisine in the heart of Fuengirola. For more information or for home delivery, call: 951 261516.

A friend of ours from the UK was visiting last weekend, and knowing his penchant for good food and wine, (and all things edible and drinkable come to that), we decided to spend Saturday and Sunday in Fuengirola, close to where he was staying.
Just a 30 minute drive from Marbella, Fuengirola is now giving other Costa del Sol hotspots a run for its money when it comes to great places to eat and drink.
Starting at La Plaza Bar in the Plaza de la Constitución, we ordered breakfast, including toasted ciabatta with serrano ham and tomatoes, and French omelette with a side order of olives, which were being picked at by two of our group, and accompanied the glasses of fino nicely. It may not be the norm to drink fino with your breakfast, but hey, it was 12.15, the church bells had already struck, so bewitching hour had passed.
After a walk down to the Saturday Market in Los Boliches, where visitors can buy a massive array of goods, including leather, bags, soaps, souvenirs, second hand goods, books, perfumes, dvd´s, or even an electric fridge or cooker (not that he was in need of one of those), we ambled back towards the centre of town for some lunch. Now, when you decide to have a tapas lunch, it is best to eat a few things in each bar, but try not to over indulge or you will be flat out by 3pm. As it turns out, he did end up flat out, but not until about 10.30pm, as he staggered up Fish Alley to bed.
Our friend stayed in a charming little hostal, called Italia, literally just off Church Square, on the corner opposite Benetton. This comfortable hostal cost him just €35 per night, including breakfast, and he vowed to stay there again (if they will have him) as it boasts such a great, central location close to everything, and just a 200m walk from the beach.
We then walked to Las Meijas, which is a great little tapas bar just 10m from the Salon Varietés Theatre. Here we indulged in marinated sardines, potato salad, boquerones in vinegar and a delicious octopus salad, accompanied by a couple of glasses of crisp, fresh white house wine. After a photo session beside the fountain outside, we decided to walk along the sea front to enjoy the superb weather, and chill out for a while on a sun bed.
El Colon Tapas Bar behind the Post Office (on the street beside Church Square) serve great home made paté, and if you want something completely different, try the newly opened Sidreria, just down from Colon on the same street, which offers strong, Asturian cider by the glass or bottle. The tapas here include: cheese stuffed mussels, octopus with chilli, fricasée of beef and stuffed baby red peppers … all delicious. Watch out for the Asturian cider .. it is much stronger than it seems (hic).
Fuengirola is great for people watching, and whether you spend the day on the beach, walk along the promenade, or relax in a café bar, you will find plenty of things to see and do. I actually prefer the Los Boliches end of town, as there are some great places to explore around the back streets, and if you venture a little way back from the beach, the prices are also much cheaper.
After a refreshing swim in the sea, which was perhaps a little ´too refreshing´ for some of us, we dozed in the shade with the Sunday papers, and enjoyed what is probably the best time of year in southern Spain. When our batteries had been recharged, we walked up to the Sohail Castle at the west end of town, which enjoys some stunning views of Fuengirola. The Castle often hosts events, particularly throughout the summer, including the German Beer Festival, so check local press for details if you are planning to visit.
A coffee and brandy in Fish Alley, where you can find a hundred different bars and restaurants, was just the job, and we didn´t need much rocking as we slumped into bed on Saturday night.
We woke on Sunday morning to another glorious day on the Costa del Sol, and another day of revelry planned. After an early morning dip, we called our friend and arranged to meet at the Sunday Market, just beside the Mosque at the Sohail Castle end of Fuengirola. After buying some great gifts for home, including a leather wallet for just €10, some colourful beads for €2 and a fantastic straw boater for €5, we walked towards the seafront, where we stumbled across the Blackberry Café.
I had visited this quirky café before, but had never eaten here. This timee, we decided to have an early lunch, and browsed the extensive (but slightly confusing menu).
Here you can choose from home made burgers, to smoked salmon bagels, to cherry gazpacho and a vast range of salads, dips and drinks. To be honest, we didn´t know what to expect in terms of quality but when the food arrived we were very pleasantly surprised (apart from the oven chips).
We ordered a Caesar Salad and a Carpaccio of Smoked Salmon. Both were superb. The salad was dressed beautifully, and came with a separate, cheesy Caesar sauce, and included crispy bacon, chicken and parmesan shavings. The Carpaccio of Salmon was delicious, and served with capers, and egg, and the portion would easily serve two people. Both dishes were accompanied by crispy toasted croutons, and the house rosé wine comes highly recommended.
After a long lunch (when isn´t it in this part of the world), we decided to take a boat trip from Fuengirola Harbour, which was amazing. If you want to take a short one hour trip or a longer day trip, you can find plenty of boats offering their services in the Port.
It´s amazing how doing ´not much´ can wear you out, and after returning home around 6.30pm after a weekend of eating and drinking in the sunshine, I was exhausted. Said friend, apparently, then took a taxi to see friends in Torremuelle, near Benalmadena, and stumbled to bed around midnight. He did manage to text to say he was still alive, the next morning, but only just!!
Another great weekend on the Costa del Sol.

No-one on earth throws a party quite like the Spanish, and even the most important religious festivals are likely to be followed by plenty of dancing, singing and merrymaking, as was the case last Sunday with the Romeria de Fuengirola.
I am lucky enough to live opposite the Parque Esparragal, near the Tamisa Hotel on the Camino de Coin, and the Romeria de Fuengirola was held there for the first time last weekend, and what a day it turned out to be.
We had friends staying at the Fuengirola Park Hotel, which, incidentally, is one of the best hotels they have stayed in on the Costa del Sol. I picked them up outside the hotel at 1pm, and the processions to the Parque Esparragal had already begun. La Virgen de Rosario was taken from sanctuary in the Fuengirola Church in the Plaza de la Constitución, and taken in a carriage to the Parque Esparragal, where thousands of people waited for a glimpse of her.
We stopped off on the way to the Romeria at the Tamisa Golf Hotel on the Camino de Coin, which enjoys a stunning location, overlooking Mijas Golf Course and the Mijas mountains. This is great hotel, with tables situated around the pool area, and plenty of space to chill out in the Autumn sunshine. If you want to eat at the Tamisa Golf, which is open to non-residents, they offer a wide choice of food, including club sandwiches, salads and home made burgers on the snack menu, to a full a la carte menu in the restaurant, or set Sunday lunch, which always proves popular. Also, you can enjoy Happy Hour Prices on drinks on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday between 6 and 8pm.
Locals at the Romeria came dressed in typical Andalucian dress, and most arrived on horseback to join in the fun. This was a real, authentic Spanish celebration, and whether you are particularly religious or not, you could not fail to be moved by the sheer number of people who attended, and the incredible atmosphere among the crowds.
We had arranged to meet friends for lunch at Hoyo 19, just 2km down the road from the Parque Esparragal, and decided to go back to the Romeria afterwards, when the party had warmed up. Hoyo 19, at Mijas Golf, has always been a favourite local restaurant of mine, and the set menu includes three courses and wine for just €12.50. We decided to ´go Spanish´ and ordered gazpacho, squid, boquerones and Spanish omelette, which were all delicious. The set menu changes regularly, or you can order from the a la carte, which boasts a fantastic range of meat, fish and egg dishes. Incredibly, the menu actually included half a bottle of wine each, which set us up nicely for an afternoon at the park.
After lunch, we went over to Peña La Cresta, another local haunt, across the river bed, which is a great little hideaway to escape to. We enjoyed coffee and brandy there, and our ´designated driver´ then took us back to the Parque Esparragal to join in the fun.
By 5pm the place was rocking, and some of the best Spanish flamenco and disco sounds were booming out of the speakers. There were three bars to choose from, and the most incredible sight was the horses, seemingly being served at the bar, as they nodded their broad heads in approval, when the paella arrived.
Food being served included fresh baguettes with fried pork, pinchitos of pork and chicken, Spanish omelette, tomato salad, Manchego cheese, and a vast choice of meat, fish and salad tapas – all reasonably priced. We were waiting at one bar, (the one with the horses) and had three plates of paella put down in front of us. When I told the waitress we hadn´t ordered anything, she said it was ´gratis.´ A nice touch, which unfortunately was wasted on us as we had just finished a three course lunch.
Our friends from England were amazed at the hospitality of the local bar owners, and were given free hats, gifts and souvenirs to take home.
As the sun began to set, the music continued to play and the park was awash with colourful costumes, dancing señoritas and Andalucian horsemen, proudly showing off their riding skills.
After another hour´s manic dancing (more manic after every glass of wine in our case) we ambled off in the direction of home only to find, yes you guessed it, another bar at the end of the park, which was surrounded by men on horseback. It almost looked as if the horses themselves had popped in for a few jars before bedtime (again the wine talking). So obviously we stopped off for ´one for the road´ as my dad refers to it, and swayed off in the direction of home.
The Romeria de Fuengirola provides the perfect day out for families, friends an tourists, who all get together to make the most of this fun-filled event. In difficult economic times, it is also worth remembering that the paella and the music, at least, are free.
If you want to explore the local area, around the Parque Esparragal, five minutes up the Camino de Coin is the Phoenix Lounge, and Someplace Else Bar, serving a great choice of home made dishes, plus the very Un-Spanish fish and chips, curries and a top Sunday roast.
Lunch or dinner is also served at the Venta La Morena, five minutes south of the park, and includes a great set menu, with plenty of options for around €12. Venta la Torre is another favourite of ours, and serves a great breakfast, including bacon, eggs, Molletes, and Spanish omelette, plus the best coffee you will find in the area. If you fancy a round of golf, the fabulous Mijas Golf Course is one of the best in the area, and this relatively flat course is perfect for golfers who want to enjoy their sport in one of the most scenic parts of southern Spain.
Whatever time of year you visit the Parque Esparragal, you will find a year-round bar open. Summer hours are usually 5.30pm until late, and winter hours are 12 noon onwards. To get to the park from the coast road, head inland at the Mcdonalds/Aqua park roundabout, taking the Coin Road. Keep on this road, and go straight, heading for Coin. You will pass the Tamisa Golf Hotel on the right hand side, about 4km from the roundabout. Just half a kilometre further on, you will see the park on the left hand side, and you will find plenty of parking, at the side of the road or behind the bar.
If you enjoy all things Spanish, but you don´t want to pay a fortune for the pleasure, this is a great little hideaway, frequented by locals and tourists alike. A laid, back relaxed atmosphere (apart from when the Romeria is on), the bar serves a great range of tapas, snacks and drinks at crisis-busting prices. This is the perfect place to relax, watch the world go by and enjoy the Autumn sunshine.
Call the local Mijas Tourist Office for details of upcoming events at the Parque Esparragal on: (0034) 952589034. Particularly worthy of note are the Romeria de Las Lagunas (usually held the last Sunday in May, and the Romeria de Fuengirola), in October.

If you have never visited Fuengirola Feria, you haven´t lived. Take a trip to town next week and enjoy 6 days of madness.
Held annually between the 6th and 12th October, this amazing feria is staged in honour of Our Lady, the Virgin of El Rosario, the Patron Saint of Fuengirola. The best time to visit, in my mind, is the first day, when the Plaza de Constitucion (or Church Square) is festooned in bunting, an makeshift bars boom out the music to the dancing throngs.
Passion, colour and noise are the first things to assault the senses as you approach the annual Feria at Fuengirola. The pride of the local people during feria week is wonderful to see – the women showing off their beautiful flamenco dresses as they perch side-saddle behind the elegant horsemen in their red cravats, sombreros and braces.
This is one of the most prestigious events in Andalucia, and the streets of the town, including local bars and restaurants are festooned in flags, banners and bunting to leave the tourists in no doubt that this is feria week. After the initial processions from the Church Square in the centre of town to the fairground, an amazing firework display marks the opening of Fuengirola´s largest and most colourful annual event.
On entering the fairground in the evening, the lights and sounds are incredible. Music booms from every stall and ride, combining excitement and great fun for all ages. There are also 32 peñas, tented structures which are run by private associations, within the feria ground which boast some of Andalucia´s most talented flamenco singers and dancers.
This festival of fun also boasts superb food including such Spanish favourites as pinchitos of pork, gambas, octopus and firm fairground favourites such as candy floss, toffee apples and various stalls of home made fudge and turron. As you would expect in this part of the world, there are plenty of marquees to buy beer and wine, and to enjoy the live music in a comfortable, albeit slightly crazy atmosphere.
There is no such thing as closing time at this event, and many revellers stay at the feria all night, and enjoy an early morning coffee with churros at one of the many local cafes surrounding the fairground.
If you want to combine a trip to Fuengirola Feria with some of the other local attractions, take the time to look around this vibrant town.
There is something for everyone in Fuengirola. Superb beaches stretch to the Mediterranean in front of attractive promenades with waterfront cafés, bars and restaurants. Colourful canopies and cool terraces mingle with gift shops, boutiques and stylish leather shops, attracting visitors from all over Spain. Fuengirola is a shopper´s paradise, and boasts some of the best stores and shopping malls in Andalucia. Whether you are searching for designer clothes, household items, groceries or gift ideas, you are spoilt for choice in this popular seaside resort.
Packed with excellent bars and restaurants, the famous dining area of fish alley, offers every type of restaurant imaginable. Chinese, Indian, Italian, Spanish, French and English restaurants sit side by side in the streets that criss cross fish alley, and the whole area is buzzing at night time.
If you want to enjoy a special meal, book a table at the long established Portofino Restaurant on the Paseo Maritimo, close to the Hotel El Puerto. The Portofino Restaurant, has flourished since the 1970´s with the same Italian owner.
Offering a wide selection of fish and meat dishes such as Sole Meuniere, Fried Halibut Goujons, Fillet Steak Diane and Beef Strogonoff with Wild Rice, this superb eaterie offers something to suit all tastes. Roast Leg of Baby Lamb and Whole Roast Duck plus other specialities can be pre-ordered when booking your table, and a range of vegetarian dishes are also available. Try the escargot with garlic butter … delicious!
The Portofino enjoys a great location close to the beach, with all other amenities including bars and nightclubs within easy walking distance. Particularly busy in the summer and at weekends, booking is highly recommended.
For shopaholics, the excellent Myramar Centre is situated just 1km from the centre of town, and boasts over 70 shops selling everything from electrical goods to clothes and homeware items. There is also a multi- plex cinema complex, including one film every day in English, a children´s play area, a supermarket and several restaurants on the top floor. Opened since 2004, this impressive centre offers free covered parking.
Aqua-Park on the outskirts of town is the most popular attraction amongst younger visitors to the Costa del Sol, and offers visitors some of the best water rides in Europe. The park also has quieter areas with pools and sunbeds, and café-bars serving snacks and drinks throughout the day.
Feria time equals fun time on the Costa del Sol, and there is no better place to party than at the annual Fuengirola Feria, when the whole town seems to come alive with bunting, live music, wonderful colours, sights and sounds, and some of the most passionate people in Andalucia. Whether you want to see the horse procession into town, dance along to the strains of Sevillanas, or simply sit with a cold glass of fino and watch the world go by, you will find it all at this unique event in one of the Coast´s most colourful towns.
Every year at Fuengirola Feria there is a special Children´s Evening where the younger members of the family can enjoy discounted or free fairground rides before the adults come to spoil the party.
I originally hail from Nottingham, England, and we were lucky enough to live near the site of the famous ´Goose Fair´ which is the largest travelling fair in Europe. Fuengirola Feria is very similar, and whatever age you are, if you enjoy indulging yourself in some truly Spanish festivities, do like the natives do, let your hair down, leave the car at home and party till dawn.
