This is a photo a friend took in Melenara (near Telde) -

As you can tell, he’s seen better days!
Melenara is quite a small place and although the locals use the beach there (especially those who live in Telde, which is a large town) tourists rarely venture up there.
Don’t confuse Melenara with Meloneras, which is in Maspalomas. A taxi to Melenara is going to cost you considerably more if you get them mixed up! There isn’t much else to do in Melenara, but Telde is worth a visit if you want to shop where the locals do.

There is a new cinema in Meloneras called Moonlight Cinema. This cinema is found in the Oasis Shopping Center and it is an open-air cinema.
There is comfortable sofa seating and you can order food or drinks to enjoy with your film, including wood-fired pizza and cocktails.Because the cinema is open-air you can also smoke there.
There are 2 films a day, both in English, or you can listen to other languages including German or Spanish on the headphones provided.
The 7pm film is usually something child-friendly and then at 9pm there are other box-office hits.

Here is a list of what is currently showing at Moonlight Cinema Meloneras. You should take a sweater or jacket with you because it can be a bit breezy outside the summer months.
Have you been to the Moonlight Cinema in Meloneras? If so, what did you think of it?

Maspalomas Lighthouse is going to be converted into an Ethnography museum later in 2012, and it will cost around 400,000 euros.
This project is part of the plans for World Tourism Day which will be held later this year in Maspalomas year and hopefully it will be completed in time for the event.
The plans are to put an information desk, craft exhibitions and a shop on the bottom floor and a gallery upstairs. The uppermost part will continue as it is – a functioning lighthouse.

Although Gran Canaria is just off the coast of Morocco, North Africa, and part of Europe (well, in some ways), you might be surprised that the time in Gran Canaria is the same as GMT. This means it is the same time in Gran Canaria as in Britain or Ireland, and one hour behind western Europe.
The clocks go forward and back (spring forward, fall back!) on the same days as they do in the UK. Because Gran Canaria is much further south and closer to the equator though, don’t expect very light mornings or nights. It is often dark by 7pm. In the UK it can be light until 11pm in the summer, but it’s not like that in subtropical places. You get about 11 hours of daylight per day in Gran Canaria (most of which is sun, hooray!)

A new law has been passed prohibiting smoking on one of Gran Canaria’s favorite beaches, Playa del Mogan. This is largely because of the dog-ends that smokers carelessly flick into the sand when they’ve finished smoking.
I might be in the minority but I wholeheartedly support this. I would change the law to ban litter in general though, not just dog-ends. The beaches are often covered in empty cans, crisp packets, sweet wrappers, and other rubbish. And the beaches which are mainly Canarian (as opposed to the tourist ones) are the worst, I’ve found.
Personally I take ALL my rubbish home with me, as I believe everyone else should. The beaches are free to use, so why foul them up for others? No other municipalities are banning smoking on the beaches (or nighttime bathing) so why is Mogan alone in doing this?
What do you think, do you agree or disagree with the smoking on beaches ban? What is the law in your country? I am anti-litter, whether it’s dog-ends, cans, plastic, or whatever else, and I think it is a good law. I also don’t like to be peacefully sunbathing then start coughing, realising I’m downwind of someone puffing on a cigarette, oblivious to everyone else. If you’re stupid enough to kill yourself with cigarettes, do it somewhere away from others.

How far in advance do you book your holiday? A few weeks, a few months or even a whole year ahead like some people are doing right now?
The growing demand for Gran Canaria holiday bookings for the rest of this year’s winter is causing a lot of bookings for next year’s winter, which has seen an increase of about 10% so far. The Nordic tour operators are finding it hard to find available rooms in Gran Canaria for winter 2012/2013, according to sources at this year’s FITUR trade fair in Madrid.
Yesterday employers at the trade fair claimed that Scandinavian tour operators searching for rooms to book in the Canary Islands, and Gran Canaria in particular, have not been able to make any bookings because of the strong growth in demand which has forced accommodation providers to reject offers, some at very good prices.
So perhaps there is a moral here somewhere. If you want to be guaranteed of some winter sun, you might want to book your winter 2012/2013 holiday quick before everything is full!

Bruce Springsteen fans, listen up – Bruce is coming to Gran Canaria! Although the date hasn’t been finalised yet (few things in Gran Canaria ever are!) it is believed to be May 15th, 2012.
The other venues and dates are Seville on May 13th, Barcelona on May 17th and 18th, San Sebastian on June 2nd and Madrid on June 17th. After that he’s in Germany, Portugal, Italy, Holland and other European countries. Busy man! The tickets will be priced around 100 pounds.
Although I’m not especially a Bruce Springsteen fan, I did go and see Shakira in concert in Las Palmas and really enjoyed that.
